One week out - September 26, 2023

Gentlemen of the Yukon Jack -

In one week, all roads lead to Lake Tahoe, the resplendent shores of Glenbrook Cove, and the 45th annual Yukon Jack.

Once again, "thank you" isn't nearly enough to the Adams and Cook families to express the gratitude and appreciation we feel each year for the privilege of being able to enjoy their beautiful home for the Yuke weekend.

Nevertheless, many "thank you's" from all of us, to both families!

I know we're all looking forward to seeing one another, catching up, lazing on the deck, and enjoying the traditional Tahoe Indian Summer

And the golf,
the cocktails,
the football,
the cards,
the great food,
the sunsets,
the Wet Woodys,
...and even packing the little garage...

It's a weekend we all value - for the old friendships we rekindle, and the new memories we make. As the saying goes...the days are long, but the years are short.

...and if you're unable to join us this year, we will raise a glass to all our absent friends. You will be missed, but we will take solace in the knowledge that you will be among us again next year!

THE BASICS

- We are breaking tradition this year, as the house will be opening at 2:30p on Thursday, Oct. 6

- The gate code was changed a couple of years ago - it is now #1209.

- After opening the house on Thursday, should fortune favor the brave with cooperating weather, a trip across the lake to Gar Woods or points unknown may be in the cards. If so, the boat would leave a little earlier than in the past...between 3:30 or 4p.

- Please bring your own towels, sleeping bags, and pillows!

GOLF

The Course

We have chosen a challenging test of golf for The Yuke's Sapphire Anniversary - the venerable Lahontan Golf Club of Martis Valley. Alan Metheny will need to be at the top of his game, to defend the 2021 title he won after his Bloody Mary and Corona-fueled victory at Toyiabe last year.

Green fees for this privilege are $180, and tipping is permissible under the club rules. Pay by CC at the pro shop prior to the round.

And a HUGE "Thank You" to Mr. Balousek for facilitating this round for all of us. As a gesture of thanks, let's all try not to take too much money from him at the Buck Em table...We'll be playing from the white tees - at 6,165 yards, it's slightly shorter than Old Greenwood.

The course has a rating of 74 and a slope of 135 - and, no, the Commish has no idea what to do with these numbers. Ask Fearless.

The inside scoop on Lahontan is that in the afternoon, the wind can come into play. You're welcome. Here's the link to the course overview if you need some light reading on the cross-country flight.

The dress code at the course is as follows...slacks, golf shorts that are not shorter than 5” above the knee, golf shirts with collar or mock neck, sweaters or jackets, and suitable golf footwear. Shirts are to be worn tucked in.

Hats are to be worn correctly, facing forward. Blue jeans, tee shirts, and tank tops are not allowed. Sandals are not considered suitable golf footwear.

In other words, everything (Mike) Wiley would wear, we can't.

The Players
Balousek
Banducci
Farwell
Hartwell
Hochmuth
Horner
Metheny
Penny
Roeth
Trutner, Ki
Trutner, Ku.
Wiley, R.

The Reverend Tom Trutner will be riding along with us providing spiritual support, offering golf tips, and trying not to fall out of the cart. Kidding, Dad! I love ya!

Friday night over cocktails, we'll draw for "random" pairings and negotiate for handicaps. Both will be posted by 7p. Harassment and belittling of the Commish begins at 7:01p

Our tee times begin at 1p on Saturday. If we pace at a 4 hour round, we should be able to enjoy a beverage or two in the opulent Lahontan Grill afterward and make it back for the last half hour of sunset and any of the following games;
Texas A&M at Alabama (5p)

Oregon at Arizona (6p)

Oregon State at Stanford (8p)

WEATHER

Once again, we're on track to enjoy the traditional Indian Summer weather that has become a hallmark of the Yuke.

Highs look to be in the mid-70s, while the lows will reach the high-30s. Knock on wood, there's no rain in the current forecast, and the winds should be mild.

And Leon's getting larger...

TRAVEL NOTES

Unlike last year, when the Caldor Fire threatened to derail the Yuke, so far the coast is clear.

For old-time's sake, here's a link to the Highway conditions, if you want to check prior to coming up...

...and here's a link to Purple Air to give you a real-time look at where the air quality stands.

RANDOM THOUGHTS
- The Commish has also stumbled on a pretty cool website if you're nostalgic for the old 104.5 KFOG.

This link will take you to a page that has archived KFOGs last day, which includes a bunch of 10 at 10 shows, and some great live shows.

Joe Bob gives it two thumbs up! Check it out!

- And it wouldn't be a letter from the desk of the Commish, without a shameless plug for the podcast.

Due to my new gig in DC and Steve's travel schedule, production of the Podcast has been paused for a few months, but there are still some oldies but goodies in the almost 40 episodes we've produced. Here's a link if you're so inclined.

- Huge shout out to Chef Tom, for what we all know will be outstanding cuisine throughout the weekend. With his Sous Chef Artie unable to join us this year, he'll be flying solo, so let's look for opportunities to lend him a hand.

OK, I've rambled on for far too long - it's not like we're all doing this for the first time

If you have any questions, please give me a call on my cell (818-822-2795)

Really looking forward to seeing each of you and enjoying our annual time together. What a gift we are able to enjoy!

As always, I hope you and yours continue to be healthy and well!

Safe travels from wherever you may be coming from, my friends - I'll see you on the deck.

Flip the last card,

Kirkles
